Gazing gorilla - Uganda

Gazing gorilla - Uganda

High up in the dense green canopy, I watched a juvenile mountain gorilla sit quietly, its dark eyes fixed on something far beyond the treetops. There was a calm stillness in that moment — a rare, intimate glimpse into the life of a species that is critically endangered.

With only around 1,080 individuals remaining in the wild, their survival depends on tireless conservation efforts led by local communities: protecting their forest homes, reducing human–wildlife conflict, and monitoring the gorillas around the clock. By trekking through the jungles of Uganda to see these gentle giants, visitors help fund these vital programs, directly supporting their protection.

This photograph, captured during one of those treks, went on to place 3rd in the Mosman Photography Awards 2024 — but the real privilege was simply being there, sharing a quiet moment with one of our planet’s most extraordinary animals.
