While on safari in Kenya, I spotted a pair of lilac-breasted rollers perched on some fence posts, their colours glowing in the sunlight. Their vibrant plumage — a mix of lilac, turquoise, and blue — stood out beautifully against the green back drop.
These birds are known for their acrobatic flight displays, often swooping and rolling through the air, which is how they got their name. Found across sub-Saharan Africa, they’re a favourite among photographers and birdwatchers alike. Capturing them in this moment, calmly perched before taking flight, was a highlight of the day.
